New World Screwworm: Community Information & Awareness Meeting
Learn what every livestock owner, pet owner, and animal enthusiast should know about the New World Screwworm and how to recognize, prevent, and respond to this emerging animal health concern.
Join UF/IFAS Extension Columbia County and local animal health experts for an educational community meeting focused on the New World Screwworm.
The New World Screwworm is a parasite that can impact livestock, pets, wildlife, and other warm-blooded animals. While there is no reason for alarm, awareness and early detection are important tools in protecting animal health.
This informational meeting will provide attendees with:
• An overview of the New World Screwworm and its life cycle
• Information on animals that may be affected
• Signs and symptoms to watch for
• Current monitoring and response efforts
• Prevention and reporting recommendations
• Opportunities to ask questions of industry experts
Tentative speakers include:
• Dr. Tracie Daniels, Local Veterinarian
• Dr. Ed Burgess, UF/IFAS Extension Veterinarian Entomologist
• Dr. Todd Thrift, UF/IFAS Extension Beef Specialist
• Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Representative (Invited)
• Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Representative (Invited)
Whether you own cattle, horses, sheep, goats, pets, or simply have an interest in Florida's agricultural and natural resources, this meeting will provide valuable information to help keep our animals and community healthy.
