In Florida, Tax Collectors are independent
constitutional officers duly elected from their counties of residence by
their fellow citizens and taxpayers.
The office of Tax Collector was established by the 1885 state
constitution based on the ideas that local taxes could best be collected
at the local level and, by being an elected office, the Tax Collector
would be more responsible to the needs of the community from which he was
elected.
The Tax Collector’s Office is responsible for the
collection of Real Estate taxes and Occupational Licenses assessed by the
county. The Tax Collector is
also the agent for the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor
Vehicles and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission with
respect to the collection of those licenses and fees assessed by these
agencies.
